More Weekend: Inside dream spaces

Wes Harrison and Black Wren Tattoo Lounge

WANT to know something of the guy who’s about to commit you to ink? Take a look around his workspace... but be warned, the results could be cryptic.

Tattoo artist Wes Harrison, of Black Wren Tattoo Lounge, says he’s not a religious person, despite the neatly framed image of Jesus on the wall.

“I bought that at a garage sale for $4,” he says.

“The woman said, ‘do you want me to pull the picture out?’

“I said no, I’ll have the picture.”

The icon is next to a sunny yellow record cover titled You Won’t Believe Your Ears! By Wes Harrison; The comedy and sound effects of America’s funniest man. Different Wes.

OK, so maybe you can’t take what’s here as a straight reflection of the artist. But that’s the whole point of being creative, isn’t it? Being open to interpretation. But let’s keep looking….

The usual scrolls and skulls of the tattooist’s world are here, pinned up beside photographs of Wes’ two-year-old son.

And an artwork covering the underside of a skateboard hints to another of Wes’ passions.

Then there’s the signed print from artist Audrey Kawasaki.

“Actually that was the second signed print,” Wes laughs.

“ I had to get her to sign another because she spelt my name wrong – she spelt it Was – but I understood, she was under a bit of pressure.

“She’s been a big influence.

“I appreciate more feminine designs. I don’t mind the old skull and cross bones but if left to my own devices I’ll do more free flowing, feminine designs.”

Wes specialises in tattooing one-off artworks on his clients, so spends a lot of time here drawing.

“It’s imperative to have your own space, if you don’t have your own space, you don’t get anything done. I found that out after our child came along. After that I had no space and I got nothing done.

“Guys need a workplace. A shed’s not my forte, hence I have here.”
