Tattoo ban for drunks

DRUNKS will be banned from getting tattoos and children barred from body piercing as part of a Government industry shake-up.

A reform plan released today extends existing regulations stopping the tattooing of minors to include bans on genital, tongue, nipple, neck and some other piercings.

Earlobe piercing will remain unrestricted for minors but parental permission will be required for children seeking eyebrow, nose, or naval piercings.

Tattooists who work on minors face increased penalties of $5000 or one year's jail, up from the current $1250 fine or three-month prison term.

Traders will be required to keep proof of consent records and make them available on request to police.

No tattooing or piercing will be permitted if the recipient is drunk.

Attorney-General John Rau said all body modification procedures involved risk and the sector needed regulation to reduce risk of injury or disfigurement.
"It is important that the health, safety and wellbeing of South Australia's young people is protected," he said.

"In the case of minors, it is appropriate for their parents and guardians to be aware of the risks associated with these procedures."

Mr Rau expects to introduce the changes to Parliament this year.
