IT'S COMMON SENSE

PROPOSALS restricting access to piercing and tattooing (The Advertiser, yesterday) apply a commonsense response to the permanent implications of such practices and the potential for lasting regret.

While tattooing and piercing are certainly very ancient practices, they have only recently swept over the younger generation - as have disturbing problems of eating disorders, delinquency, drug use, self-harm and suicide.

Reasoning about cause and effect is particularly difficult.

But the decline in faith, accompanied by massive strains on the traditional family, can only have negative implications for self-esteem, leading to anti-body behaviour.

The trend away from faith and family may well have lasting implications of deep regret.
